I got the DVD of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog a few months ago. I have considered doing a review of it, but I haven’t yet made my way through all the extras (apparently half of which are Easter Eggs, only accessible through various inconvenient ways). I did recently make my way through its most notable extra though, proudly displayed on the front cover under the title Commentary! The Musical.
As the title would suggest, it’s basically a commentary track containing brand new songs related to the film and its various cast members. For example, there’s a song about the writer’s strike that served as the origins to the film, and there’s a song about how one of the writers of the musical only got a minor part on screen due to her Asian heritage. Inbetween the songs there’s some humorous, scripted banter.
My favourite song from this commentary musical (or should that be musical commentary?) is this week’s pick, in which Nathan Fillion sings an old sea shanty about how much better he is than Neil Patrick Harris.
Now and then the music does sync up to what’s happening on the screen; for example, the line “just jumped off a moving automobile” is sung just after Nathan’s character – Captain Hammer – did just that.
A pretty fun concept. Just too bad they couldn’t have released the actual songs on CD or for digital distribution. Would perhaps have undermined the concept, but would make it easier for fans who have the DVD to listen to the commentary music without having to use a DVD player.
