Finally got my hands on the new Animal Collective album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, which has been getting rave reviews. I actually pre-ordered it from online UK retailer CD WOW!, hoping I’d then get it shortly after the release date – or maybe even a day or two prior to it – but it kept getting delayed. So I cancelled the order and picked it up at a store instead.
It’s really good! Unlike anything I’ve ever heard, including their previous albums. Psychedelic electronic pop creating beautiful sonic landscapes.
I’m not too thrilled with the music video they released to go with the album, but what can you do; they’re not a band known for remarkable music videos. But here it is.
I’ll also add this unofficial video of another song from the album, “Bluish”, which is one of my current favorites.
And this is the album’s freaky front cover. It has a curious visual effect if you click on it to view the full size version. Unfortunately you don’t get the effect as strongly, if at all, on the actual printed cover. I’m guessing it might not be big enough, or the print quality might not be good enough.
One piece of critique though, is how the cover is built, which I’m unfortunately not able to describe. It’s creative and interesting, sure, but it’s very cumbersome to get the CD in and out – at least if you don’t want to damage the cover. Why couldn’t they have gone for a plain digipak or jewel case solution? Or something else that’s a bit more on the functional side.
