Back in the day I saw the music video for Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” a few times, and for some reason I thought it was the title song of some comedy film starring Chevy Chase called The Bodyguard. Turns out no such film exists and that my mind had just made things up, probably based on the fact that Chevy Chase starred in the music video for the song and maybe having seen posters for the thriller The Bodyguard from 1992 or the comedy My Bodyguard from 1980. The song was released in 1986, between the two films.
Despite my disappointment at finding out no such film existed, it’s a good song, and the music video is amusing while not really trying too hard and being comfortably laid back. According to Wikipedia, the song is most likely about a man going through a mid life crisis, though to me it sounds more like a fun nonsense song with some existentialism thrown in. But then, I initially thought it was from a nonexistent film. Regardless, it’s this week’s pick.
