Fidelity Wars #92: Jenny Toomey – “Every Little Bit Hurts”

Jenny Toomey is an indie musician with two solo-CDs to her name, once of which is Tempting, with the descriptive subtitle Sings The Songs Of Franklin Bruno. Franklin Bruno is another indie musician, known as the singer-songwriter behind the band Nothing Painted Blue as well as a sufficiently frequent collaborator with John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. Both Franklin Bruno and Jenny Toomey actually hold degrees in philosophy – if their current Wikipedia pages are to be believed – just like myself! Perhaps I can put this degree of mine to some good use after all, and become an indie musician! Oh, wait, I sort of already am. Well, becoming a successful indie musician then! Complete with rewarding academic and creative side-projects which would both win me much renown and a decent amount of money. Dreamy sigh.

Anyway. My favourite song off this album is this week’s pick.

Jenny Toomey – “Every Little Bit Hurts”

I’m not too familiar with Franklin Bruno’s works, so I can’t compare many of the songs to the originals. “Every Little Bit Hurts” is pretty different from most of the other songs on the album; whereas most of the other songs are relaxing jazzy bossa nova-ish lounge numbers (with one or two exceptions), this is actually pretty loud and rockin’. It feels less reflective and more raw, less about storytelling and more about emotional expression, and the lyrics are a lot of fun.
