Fidelity Wars #70: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark – “Souvenir”

Delayed due to Team Fortress 2, the fourth most common cause of delays.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, popularly abbreviated as OMD, is a British new wave slash synthpop band of which I recently was introduced. (Hi, Lawrie!) I was already familiar with the abbreviation though, as a song by the British band Hefner on their Catfight! compilation was called “OMD”, which I’m guessing was given that title due to the use of a drum machine on the song, which is an instrument commonly used by OMD; the song itself is about dancing with a girl on the dance floor.

I’m still fairly unfamiliar with the band, and haven’t heard much by them, but their song “Souvenir” is lovely, and it’s my pick for the week. What it’s about? I’m not quite sure. It’s rather vague and minimalistic, perhaps adding to the poetry of it. According to SongMeanings, seems like the general theme is obsession.

And after playing around some on my keyboard, I managed to figure out the chords for the song, and promptly decided to record a cover of it. So as an added bonus, here’s The Society Of Poor Academics‘ take on the song. Slightly more lo-fi than the original.
